Re: FC CARLOW vs TRALEE DYNAMOS on Mon Aug 24, 2009 2:24 pm
FC CARLOW TOPPLE TRALEE
FC CARLOW 3-1 TRALEE DYNAMOS
Two teams who were on great league runs met in Ballon on Sunday, for this A Championship clash. FC Carlow are on a run of three wins from four games, while Tralee Dynamos who had won seven of their last eight, came to Carlow knowing that a win would put them top of the league. FC Carlow had other ideas however and are now the in-form team, having strengthened their squad with a number of new players for the second half of the season.
This was the proverbial game of two halves, with FC Carlow playing against a very strong wind in the first half, but they settled into the game quicker however and had the first couple of real chances, as Craig Hore’s bicycle kick was just outside the post on 5 minutes followed in the 10th minute by a Jimmy Dermody shot which was just over, after a good move involving Emmet Phelan and Andrew Hickey.
This gave Dynamos the wake up call they needed and two minutes later a good move involving David Hayes and Jonathan Burrows set up Jamie McIntyre but his shot didn’t trouble Gavin Dowling in the FC Carlow goal.
The visitors did not have to wait too long for the breakthrough however. A Calow attack broke down when Eoin Fitzgerald intercepted a misplaced pass, with time and space on the ball, he picked out the perfect pass for Peter McCarthy to run onto and he finished calmly in the 14th minute. Dynamos almost got through again minutes later when a carbon copy move almost came off, but this time Adam Byrne got back to clear the danger.
In the final minutes of the first, Dynamos were given a scare, when Darragh Walshe almost got through on goal, only to be denied by a good O’Rahilly tackle while Timmy Cotter in the Dynamos goal, did very well to finger-tip over a superb Robbie Farrell strike in the 43rd minute.
To their credit Dynamos tried to take the game to FC Carlow in the opening period of the second half. A cross from the left wing found McCarthys head, but he couldn’t keep the header down. What proved to be a turning point in the game came on the hour mark when Gavin Dowling made an excellent save to deny Wayne Conway and keep FC Carlow in the game.
The home team then made two substitutions, which proved to be the difference between the teams. Shane Clarke was introduced on the left wing, with debutant, Greg Sykula coming on up-front. At this stage of the game, Dynamos were desperately trying to hold out for a narrow victory, but it was Carlow who looked hungrier and they were definitely finishing much the stronger, with Brian Quigley and Robbie Farrell dominating midfield. Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 78th minute when a quick Dynamos free kick was cleared by Davey Walker, Sykula was first to react and beat the Dynamos cover to the ball, he took it past the out rushing Cotter and calmly finished from a tight angle to put Carlow back on level terms.
The FC Carlow changes were working a treat and in the 83rd minute Shane Clarke chased down what looked to be a lost cause, he somehow managed to reach the ball and crossed into the danger area where Andrew Hickey rose highest to head the ball home. FC Carlow put the result beyond doubt 4 minutes later, when Clarke again crossed to another sub Alan Wren who found space inside the Dynamos box and made no mistake to give his side all three points, sparking off wild celebrations on the Carlow bench.
This win moves FC Carlow above Sporting Fingal and level on points with St. Patrick’s Athletic and they will surely be full of confidence next Sunday when they travel to Dublin to play Bohemians at 12 noon in DCU.

Well done to all on a great win against Tralee Dynamos, also its hard on the side when a referee will make sure that home side is going to stay on top ie Bohs. But one must congratulate all involved in F.C. Carlow. The present side are a match for any of the A Championship sides. best of luck to the under 20s when they take on Mick Wallace and his Wexford youths side. Zico
